Positivity

Published 14/10/2016 by inspiringyourspirit

My Dear Friends,

Positivity.. noun. ….’The quality or state of being positive’. “Something that is positive’

What does this word really mean to me and to you?….Well, I believe that waking up with a positive attitude is really important to our lives, positivity brings us to where we want to be, it connects us to our heart, it connects us to our divine self, to our true self and it takes us away from our negative self, our ego-self!

We believe that things or people make us unhappy, but this is not accurate. We make ourselves unhappy. Very little is needed to make our lives happy; we all already possess this skill,  it’s all to do with our way of thinking.

Suffering and the onslaught of negativity and pain is brought on from our desires. Our desire to remain in the current state, to keep our youthful looks, our trim figure, our beautiful hair, our desire to gain wealth, desire to achieve greater control, greater power, more authority, our desire for sensual pleasures, for alcohol, drugs, food, money, and of course our desire to be happy….So we constantly strive to find this happiness everywhere, we seek it each and every day, we see people on the street, on the TV in the media who look happy in their big houses, their jobs, in their relationships..so we want the same, right?

I have learned that happiness starts within, it starts with our thoughts and our positivity helps is live happy contented lives, I know for sure that when my ego mind steps up, then my happiness and positivity levels drop through the floor. It eats away at you, controls you, and brings you down to its level, to where it wants you to be.

So, I have decided that ‘positivity’ is my new keyword, I have been through a lot, especially over these past few months. This has allowed my ego mind to play tricks on me, to put me in ‘The Victim’ mode, to make me feel sorry for myself, to allow me to have negative thoughts about all that I do, and all that happens to me. My negative emotions have taken control of my life…..and, ‘enough is enough’…I’m taking my life back,

……I’m taking my life back, I’m getting back in the saddle, taking up the reigns again for my life, I’m moving on, I’m holding my head high and ‘I’m happy 🙂

So, this morning when my dogs came in to wake me, I got up straight away, I greeted them with a smile as they wagged their tails and gave me their usual dose of unconditional love, I gave thanks in prayer to The Buddha, to the Ascended Masters, to My Parents, to my family and friends, and I vowed to continue my journey of self-discovery with a new vigour, with a bounce in my step, and with new love in my heart, a new love for me, for the person I am and for the person I will be.

Lost then Found

Lost then Found

Lost in the spinning vortex of my mind

Thoughts rushing around like clothes in a washing machine

Thought after thought, never ending

Where do I begin, what do I do

Time stands still as my thoughts take control

I’m going nowhere fast

It’s like I’m standing at the crossroads of my life

Stuck, no idea which way to go

How do I break free, know which road to choose

Is it left, is it right or is it straight ahead

My life is in tatters as my mind keeps telling me

You’r useless, no use to anyone

I’m tired, I’m lonely, I’m sad with my life

Is my mind right or can I break free

Free from these chains holding on to me

Show me the light to please set me free

From a flicker to a flame

The light breaks the darkness of my life

The shadows begin to disappear

And new life blooms in front of my eyes

New life, new beauty, new focus

Beyond the shadows and darkness is life

Life for you, a new day is dawning

Breaking free now and rushing forth

On to tomorrow, setting myself free

Living in the now as it’s meant to be

Understanding self, whom I’m meant to be

A joy, at last now I know who I am

A being of light, a son, a brother, a husband, a friend

In service to humanity

At peace with the world

Seeing joy and in gratitude for each day

Love, peace and kindness to all beings

Living Life in the Present

Published 05/04/2016 by inspiringyourspirit

Paying attention to the present moment, rather than constantly getting lost in ruminative fantasies, that we learn most and can be best prepared for our lives.

Borkovec on the Present

This is a powerful passage and has a great deal of resonance with mindfulness practice.  Part of what we’re trying to do is to learn from life – but to learn, we need to be present. One definition of mindfulness is that it’s a state of mind where we can encode memories.  Mindfulness is a kind of alertness where the attention can actually absorb what is happening, moment-by-moment.

The only influence we have on the future is how well we tend to the present. By tending to what’s here and what’s now, and learning from what’s here and now, we grow in ways that should help us meet the future most effectively.

Imagining the Future: How good are we at predicting our emotional responses?

So much of anxiety is about imagining the future.  But how good are we at imagining our emotional future? How good are our predictions about how a ‘good’ or ‘bad’ event might make us feel? There is a whole body of research dedicated to these types of questions called affective forecasting.  Daniel Gilbert, the Harvard psychologist and author of Stumbling on Happiness, has become famous for this work. As it turns out, while we tend to be accurate guessing whether a particular event is likely to make us feel positive or negative, we tend to make important errors in other aspects of our predictions.  Specifically, we tend to overestimate the impact of particular emotional events.  That is, we believe that a particular event will have both a more intense and enduring effect on our emotional life.  Here is a summary of one of Gilbert’s articles:

Affective Forecasting

What is being suggested here is that we are actually more resilient than we tend to believe. We assume that we’ll have more trouble coping than we tend to have. When faced with a challenging situation, the mind quickly makes meanings and interpretations that help soften the impact and we feel better much faster than we tend to anticipate.  This is important for us to absorb.

All the Forks in All the Roads

The famous poem, The Road Not Taken, from Robert Frost:
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I–
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

It’s a lovely poem – but we want to make a different point than the one that’s usually made about this poem.  When we pay attention to our minds, it feels like we’re always coming to a fork in the road. Each decision, each uncertainty, each possibility – it seems we’re at a new fork, standing before two roads that diverge. We usually assume that one road is the right way and one road is the wrong way – and if we just think hard enough, we’ll figure out which is which.  But is this true? How many times do we truly come to fork in the road that is truly an important fork? And can we always know which is the “right” path?

Some of what mindfulness practice shows us is that there are actually fewer forks than we think and that even what seemed like a fork, in retrospect, may not be of major importance. We probably have all had that experience where we thought our lives were riding on the outcome of something specific – but later realize that it actually didn’t matter much which way it turned out.  Both roads have joys and sorrows.  Both roads have pleasure and pain and gain and loss.  Sometimes the road that seems less preferable has things to teach us we could never imagine.

Surrender to Receive all that you Need

Published 26/01/2016 by inspiringyourspirit

11227938_10208811670198191_5135480313477314544_n

Wow!…I have always had problems with this statement.. ‘Surrender to Receive all that you Need’. Like many, I have been travelling my own life’s journey and to date that’s about 55 years and 210 day’s to be precise in my case 🙂 and I still have trouble with the letting go, the surrender of the past!

The past is the past and it should firmly remain in the past. The future is the future and it should firmly remain in the future. The only thing we have for sure is ‘Now’, the present moment, all that we do, ‘EVER’ is in the ‘Present Moment’, so why do we waste so much time thinking of the past and worrying about the future?…Our previous life experiences, good or bad; play perfectly into the hands of our Ego Mind, adding fuel to the Ego’s fire and allowing it to hold us hostage with previous life experiences especially if the were bad, caused us trouble, held us back etc. And the uncertainty of the future, what it holds in store for us does exactly the same thing, allowing our Ego Mind to take yet another opportunity to cause us grief, ‘Your not worthy of that, you will fail at that, “Remember when you did that before and it caused you this problem? ‘so you had better not do that again’…and on and on these old thought patterns control us. Memories are good and they allow us to equip ourselves as we move forward but we do our lives a major injustice when we allow our Ego Minds to control who we are and from reaching our full potential.

Living our life in the ‘Now’ is perfect when we read about it in books, listen to self-help recordings, attend seminars, training programs and self-help groups but the reality is like the never ending diet, we try, then try, then try and try again but we just can’t stop that Ego Mind, that little demon on our shoulder from saying, “Watch out for that”, ‘Don’t do that”, ‘Remeber what happened before”, “you will fail at that”, “you will never loose weight”, etc, etc, etc, So in my opinion, and for what it’s worth my advice is…….

“Stick With It”…..Meditate often, everyday if you can, break free from what holds you back, from what ties you down and ‘Just Be’, ‘Just Breathe’, connect with your inner self, meditate and go into your heart, love yourself for what you are ‘Now’ and for what you ‘Have in your life now’, be grateful for all that you are and ‘Just Be You’, let go of all the pressures that surround your day and ‘Let Go’ to ‘Receive something far greater than your own plan allowed’ and you will find ‘Peace and Love’ because my friends, they ‘lie within’.

Blessings to you all my friends, may your meditations take you to your heart and connect you to your soul 🙂

We Are All Visitors to This Life, We Are Just Passing Through.

Published 15/12/2015 by inspiringyourspirit

My Dear Friends,

I came across this wonderful quote today and felt the urge to write a simple post 🙂

“We are all visitors to this time, this place. We are just passing through. Our purpose here is to observe, to learn, to grow, to love ….and then we return home”…..

Wonderful..I just love it. These wonderful words really do resonate with my heart. As you all know, I recently had an actual death experience, but luckily for me I was brought back by the wonderful paramedics in the ambulance, and since that experience; I have been spending countless hours just thinking, well, not so much thinking, rather; clearing my mind of the clutter and actually observing my life and all that goes on in and around my life.

This ’emptiness of mind’ as I like to call it has given me a new perspective of what is and what is not important. I now 100% realise that love for myself, for my family, for friends and all beings is really important to me. This observation has taught me that I am wasting, yes; wasting so much of my life on trivial, unimportant things. I’m doing far too much to get the job done, but not paying any attention to myself, to my health, to my life. I always do my utmost best to do everything on time, to be perfect or as near perfect as possible, to make everyone happy, to do, to do more and to do even more for everyone….but me!….

Love of self, is really important, because if we don’t love ourselves then how can we expect others to love us?

So, we are now coming close to the end of 2015 and I am not one to have New Year Resolutions, to set myself goals for the coming year but I thought, Hey! Why not this year!….So, I have decided that I will clean up my act, sweep the floors and cobwebs our of my life and start 2016 with a fresh outlook, I will love myself, each and every day, I will honour myself each day, I will be thankful for each day, I will be thankful for all I have in my life, I will hold love and compassion in my heart for all beings here on earth, I will do my best to help make our world a better place to live, I will cut out the wasted hours and turn these hours into positive acts of kindness to myself and to others, I will write more, I will write that book that I have promised to do for the past ???? How many years, I will spend more time with my family and friends, I will spend more time in nature, I will meditate more, I will want for less….and

I will contemplate on and learn from all my past experiences, I will grow more spiritually, I will Love…and…after doing all I can and after ‘Living the rest of my life to the full’…

I will return home 🙂

Tomorrow is a new day, tomorrow is a new opportunity to live 🙂

Where Is My Life Taking Me?

Published 22/10/2015 by inspiringyourspirit

563386_363892193684141_707840138_n

My Dear Friends,

Here I go again…thinking…and raising myself another challenging question…….

Where is my life taking me?

I sit, I ponder, I think and I meditate……..

………

…….

Just when we think our life is settled, some curve ball comes our way!…..Our life is turned upside downI Change my friends is inevitable , our lives are constantly in flow, this way, that way, ever changing and we ourselves never stay still, especially our minds, worrying about this, worrying about that, planning this, arranging that, floating off after the next thought process that comes into our minds and as were following that though another thought pops up and we follow that too, and on and on it goes, our busy minds controlling our lives….But, do we have to be slaves to our mind, can we draw the line in the sand and say to our mind ‘No More’, I don’t want to follow you anymore, I want freedom of mind, I want peace in my life?

Well, we could all pack up our things now and go off and become Buddhist Monks or Nuns, we could go off to the mountains of India, Thailand or Tibet, we could seek out a Guru to follow, we could give up all our worldly possessions and meditate for years on end…. But!…, will that satisfy our mind and bring us a more peaceful and contented life?…For some, yes,… It is a noble path to follow and certainly one I greatly respect and often wish for myself…But, I also live in the realities of life and I honour who I am, where I am and what is important for me. I, like most of you have family, friends, colleagues, work, commitments etc, I, like many others also dream of that better life, a more fulfilling spiritual life in which I can help those less fortunate than I.

So, where is my life taking me?….

Well, It’s taking me where I need to be each day, and I need to come to terms with that very fact, I am where I am because how and what I think, I’m here right now writing this post because this is where I need to be and this is what I should be doing right now…Fact!

I work with people Spiritually and through Psychology each and everyday, I and those who know me know what sort of man I am, I give my all, I give my love, I give my compassion out to humanity everyday and I’m certainly grateful for all the love I have in my life, for all the abundance in my life, for all the support I have in my life and I always give thanks for all that I am in each and every moment, so…..

My life is what I make of it, it will flow in the direction I take it,….

I choose to live a life of Love, Compassion and Support for the betterment of humanity, mother earth and our environment 🙂

Look deeply inside and connect with the soul

My Dear Friends,

If only!

As the old saying goes ‘Beauty is only skin deep’ and it is oh so true. If only we could peel back the outer layer of everyone we meet and connect directly with their heart and their soul, we would make perfect connections and see the real person inside the human cover.

Connecting heart to heart and soul to soul would teach us so much and our understanding re the needs and wishes of the other person would not be tainted with what we see through our very ‘Ego centric eyes’, he/she is handsome, beautiful, fat, thin, ugly, pretty, smart, scruffy, black, white, yellow, brown, short, tall, blond, brunette, bald, etc, we would truly feel the other person and connect as connections should be made, deeply through the heart and to the soul. Our world, I am sure would be a happier place, a more peaceful place. There would and always will be differences of opinion I’m sure, misunderstandings, cross cultural differences of some sort but I do feel that all in all, our lives, our communications and the relationships forged would be better and stronger than they are now.

Food for thought my friends, food for thought!

Choose Happiness, because it makes you feel Alive!

Published 02/10/2015 by inspiringyourspirit

My Dear Friends,

Happiness is a choice we all make, but for the majority happiness for many is what they are always seeking, each day waking up, but feeling down, feeling depressed, not happy with their lives, their jobs, their house, their car, the food on their table, the clothes on their back…always seeking more of what they think will ultimately bring them happiness… but for others; many people around the world who have very little in their lives, happiness comes from just waking up in the morning and seeing the sunrise, to smell the scent of the flowers, to see a smile on a child’s face brings absolute joy and happiness.

So my dearest friends, happiness is a choice….. It starts within…So….

Choose wisely 🙂

Observation & Judgement …..Your Mind and The Games We Have To Play

Published 13/08/2015 by inspiringyourspirit

awareness

My Dear Friends,

You have to be quicker than your own mind!

When you see yourself analysing or negatively judging what you observe in yourself, whether it is a thought, emotion, or attitude, be more clever than the one who is judging or analysing. Step back into the observer; observe the judge and don’t judge him. The judge becomes the object of your observation. Remember to make every disturbing element the object of your observation; in this way, the observer goes more deeply into observation each time, whereas if you see what comes as an obstacle to observation, it becomes one.

The more you are in the observer , the less importance the object you observe has. When you are in the state of the observer, , which is not the state of the dreamer, you observe what you decide to observe and are awake to the rest; otherwise this state of concentration leads to emptiness, but to a hollow emptiness. True emptiness is the emptiness of the observer who is detached from the mechanism and capable of taking in everything. Thoughts come and go in your emptiness, and it remains empty because nothing remains attached to it.  The observer sees everything, it remains tranquil, there are no negative emotions . Everything is handles rightly. Things pass, the observer can take them seriously or lightly, it is identified with nothing. Judgment belongs to the world of things that pass.

So keep on observing with no judgment my friends and have some fun with your mind.

Peace, what does it mean to you?

Published 04/08/2015 by inspiringyourspirit

CLe65u6UcAAmgvH

My Dear Friends,

Oh my, I’ve been thinking again!…..

I don’t know what’s got a hold of me since i’ve been away, maybe it was the quietness of my retreat, the contact with nature, time on my own to reflect and be thankful for all I have in my life, who knows but it’s great to be back and thinking again 🙂

I was up early again this morning, jet lag has been far worse than normal this time and has been playing havoc with my sleep patterns 😦 Still, it does also have its blessings as being awake so early gives me time to just sit, to be at one with myself and to reflect and think. This morning’s topic was ‘Peace’ and what does that word really mean to me? It conjours up to sides for me, one is the obvious ‘world peace’ where all countries come together in harmony and bring about an end to conflicts between different cultures, religions and countries then the other is being ‘at peace’, peace within myself/yourself.

I don’t think many people actually find peace with themselves, they are always chasing around looking for something more for their lives, more money, a better job, bigger house, bigger car, a holiday, more clothes, a fancy watch, diamond ring, more education, just more and then more, also seeking happiness where ever they go, meeting new friends, going out more, socialising, building a dream, looking for love, looking for acceptance, looking for praise, looking and looking outside, a constant journey seeking out happiness and peace….but the reality is you wont find it outside, you wont find it in things, you wont find it in your travels, you wont find it in a bigger house or a new job or a new relationship…….

Happiness and peace are within…..

And once you come to terms with that then you can let go, you can free yourself of the chains that hold you back, you can become one with yourself, you can start to love yourself and find your true self, your happiness and your inner peace.

Take time out today my friends, take time to just be you, take time to sit with yourself and just be the wonderful you 🙂

Are Your Feeling Caged In By Your Life?

Published 03/07/2015 by inspiringyourspirit

3122972.large

Early one evening, while walking down the hill, I noticed a middle school with its Iron Gates tightly closed and locked. This scene led me to reflect on the way in which many people lead their lives. They attend school and are caged within the confines of the school gates, they find a partner, enter into a relationship or get married, and are caged in by that relationship, they go to work and are caged in by the constraints within the company, they die, and are caged in a box.

Being caged is due to not only external factors but also by emotional and ego mind factors. Throughout our lives, we seem to be building barriers and caging ourselves in to our own little world and proudly locking ourselves in!

Do you feel caged in by the constraints of your life, or are you as free as a bird, living your life with a smile on your face and love in your heart?

Have a great weekend my friends.

Touching on Love Again!

Published 16/06/2015 by inspiringyourspirit

lord-buddha-animated-images-beautiful-best-latest

Ah, here I am again talking about love 🙂

But what is love?

I have posted about Love so many times, love for self, love for others, unconditional love etc……

But when i sit down, meditate and go into my heart centre i realise that most of us are under the wrong impression of what love really is!

Oh my!, What am I letting myself in for now!…..I guess I will get lots of replies stating…’Rubbish Post’,……. Love is….etc!

Well, here goes anyway 🙂

To me, Love is everything, Love is with us from the day we are conceived because our mother gives us the love from her body to help carry us through the pregnancy period; until the day that we are born, then we receive the love from our parent/s, our siblings, our families… we receive love from our friends, our colleagues and from our experiences in life.

Love is all around…..So we should be happy, right?

Actually, the next time your sitting with your dog or your cat, take a proper look at the feeling, the sensation and their energy towards you, they are in fact giving you love, unconditional love, especially from the dog. Cat’s.. well, they have their own opinions on life and will give you their love when they are ready, but a dog’s love is unconditional and always!….Then take a long look at your life, where is your love? how do you show your love? do you love yourself?…I don’t mean how you look in a mirror, but deep down, Do you love who you are?, What you stand for and where you are going with your life?

I often ask my friends:-

What is important to your life,

What do you feel is missing from your life?,

What are you seeking, looking for in your life?

And the answers are:

Love

Happiness

Success

But love comes, and it goes…We think and believe that love is just a relationship thing between two people, a partnership, a marriage etc,…and then, when that love goes away, we are left in a mess, often deep down in depression, bringing anxiety, unhappiness and sadness to our life ……

So! How many of us actually love ourselves?…..

Actually not that many of us because most of us don’t love the way we look, we are not happy with our weight, body shape, we are either too tall or too short, too much hair or (in my case lack of hair) 🙂 We don’t love our jobs, we don’t love our daily lives, we don’t love our homes and, on and on the lack of love for ourselves goes on causing us to be unhappy with who we are……

Well! , let me tell you something.

If you don’t love yourself then how do you expect to attract love into your life?

So, pick yourself up, start a new page and take another look at yourself…..What’s not to love!……..Right?

You are a Divine being, you are a wonderful creation, you are love itself!…And the sooner you realise this and make this your daily mantra then the sooner you can start enjoying your life, attracting more love into your daily life then bringing about happiness and then achieving all the success you truly want in your life.

So, if you are going to say  ‘Rubbish Post’ then fine, but if for one second you feel you are not 100% happy with the love in your life and the love for yourself; then please take a long look at yourself, see who you really are, connect with your Divine Self, connect with your heart and see the love, then share the love and …Love….Will come right back at ya 🙂

Go on, do yourself a favour for once…ACT!

Connecting With and Understanding Yourself…. Enjoying Your Life To The Full

Published 26/02/2015 by inspiringyourspirit

031-Self-Reflection-1280x1024

Understanding Self:

Getting to understand yourself, is an art form that many never achieve in their lifetime, many people believe they know who they are but actually they don’t have the slightest clue!

How often do you shut your self away from the world, and by shutting away I don’t mean going to the top of the Himalaya’s and sitting in a cave by yourself for ten years 🙂 What i mean is; do you switch off from the world each day, do you set yourself time each day to have no interruptions, in a room with just you, no tv, no radio, no newspapers, books, magazines, no phone, no computer,no electronics, no people, no children, nothing to disturb your time with yourself?

150113_10152174819390247_379393902_n

It’s not easy at first, setting aside time in what you probably believe is already a fully scheduled day, getting up, shower, breakfast, dressing for school, work or getting yourself and or your children ready for your day, attending back to back meetings, dropping the kids to school, picking them up, taking them to after school activities, checking homework, making dinner, eating dinner, bathing and dressing the children, putting them to bed, watching tv, reading a book, getting yourself ready for bed…etc, etc, the list is endless, or so we all believe!

We just don’t have any time in our lives for ourself!

Wrong!

It’s your life, you can make choices re your life, you are the master of your schedule and you, only you can make the time! After all, it’s certainly in your own best interest to make time for yourself, your body needs this time, your mind needs this time and your heart certainly needs this time! So why is it we are so bad at setting time for ourselves?….Well, we feel guilty, that’s why! We feel that we are being self indulgent by setting ‘valuable’ time aside just for ourselves,…..Bullsh*t (sorry for the bad language my dear friends)……., take it from me…STOP IT, NOW!, Set up time each and every day to give yourself quality time on your own, start small, it can be 10 minutes per day at first, try this for a few days then increase your time slowly to 15, 20,30 minutes, or even better 45 minutes or an hour, but make sure you set your schedule, set your time, your phone whatever to remind you to go and enjoy time with yourself, don’t give up on yourself, keep the commitment to this time each and every day and I guarantee you will start to know yourself so much better than you do right now, you will have no external influences, just you, your time is your own for you, only you and your meditation, reflections on who you are, where your life is right now and where you want to be, this quality time will enhance your levels of understanding for others, you will be more empathetic towards yourself and to others, your life will benefit from the quality time you give yourself…TRUST ME… give it a try, if you need help, I’m here to help you, if you need help with meditations, just let me know and i will send you some to help you along the way, but please, please my friends…get in touch with yourself and start to enjoy the rest of this life 🙂

Your Emotions and How To Use Them On Your Life’s Journey

Published 29/09/2014 by inspiringyourspirit

Plutchik-wheel-of-emotions

Ram Dass

How can we use our emotions positively on our spiritual path?  We can look at the practice of what is called devotional yoga, or Bhakti Yoga as it’s called in Hinduism. For example, if your relationship is to say Christ- you could take a picture of Jesus and then think about the qualities of his life; and the qualities of his compassion; and the qualities of his beauty of being; and the qualities of his reminding people about God. And you could look at that being and it would generate in you, if you allow it, emotional responses.

These emotional responses are relational. They are warm, human responses of Love, of caring, of tenderness. Then if you stay with that picture of Jesus and keep being with Jesus, you will go beyond those into a deeper way of being with him. Of just being with him in the presence sense. And that presence includes more and more of the essence of love. But you go through the emotional doorway. You use your emotional heart as a vehicle to getting into that deeper way of being with God. That’s one way.

Then there are other kinds of emotions that are generated — emotions like anger, sadness, joy, that whole range of emotions. What one cultivates is spaciousness or an awareness that allows you to acknowledge the feelings, and it comes back to the word appreciating again. Acknowledge the feelings and allow them and see them as part of the human condition. They are like subtle thought forms. Emotions are really subtle thought forms. And they all arise in response to something. They are reactions that come. If somebody goes like that, you have a certain emotional response. If they go like that, you have a different response. And you can feel how reactive your emotions are to situations. So you cultivate a quietness in yourself that just watches these things coming and going and arising and passing away. And you learn not to act out your emotions, but just to appreciate and allow them. That’s part of the way in which you use them spiritually. Spiritually, you don’t act out your emotions. You just acknowledge them. You don’t deny them though. You don’t push them down. You acknowledge that I’m angry, but you don’t have to say “Hey, I’m angry.” That’s different. But you acknowledge it; you don’t deny it. That’s the key thing.

Emotions2

So the way you would use emotions like love and caring is in devotional practices, you aim them towards God. And for the other kinds of emotional realms, you witness them and you sit with them and you watch them change and come and go but you don’t deny them- you allow them to be burnt in the light of awareness. Because that’s part of your human condition. I mean when we talk about service, you will see how we deal with suffering. And you will see that it awakens intense emotions. And your heart is breaking. And you have to let your heart break. But you’ve cultivated another plane of reality which is the one that notices and allows it and behind it all is the quality of equanimity. So, emotions work best when you also have another plane that is not emotional, going simultaneously with it actually. Because getting lost in your emotional reactivity just digs a deeper karmic hole. But allowing your humanity, that’s really part of it. Allowing your humanity.

Meditation and Mindfulness, a Journey to My Soul

Published 09/05/2014 by inspiringyourspirit

I sit
I close my eyes
I relax
I concentrate on my breath and calm my mind

In and out
In and out
In and out
Deeper and deeper I go, ever closer to my soul

Thoughts enter my mind
Problems at work, problems at home, my past, my future
My life in thoughts, my ego at work, holding me back from the ‘Now’
Back to my breath, In and Out, In and Out

Thank you thought, I don’t need you now
Off they go disappearing forever, forgotten already and on I go
Back to my breath, in and, out, in and out,
Closer to my soul, one breath at a time

Heart beating slowly, in rhythm with my breath
Oxygen filling my body from limb to limb and cell to cell
Channeling my mind and focus on my skin
Perspiration on my brow, a cool sensation, calm and free

I see a pathway leading down, down and down it goes
I follow with joy as the adventure unfolds
My teenage years and childhood lie before me
Innocence to life, a happy place to be

I stay awhile and dream
I play amongst the trees, smell the sweetness of the flowers and watch the bees
I bathe my feet in the coolness of the stream and watch the birds fly by on wings up high
My journey nears its end

Time to return, to reality as is
My breath takes me back, In and Out, In and Out
Upwards I go with every step on the pathway from my soul
Returning again to life, my life
My meditation ends

Because of my all embracing hearing my name Kuan Yin is known everywhere.  Since I myself do not meditate on sound but on the meditator.  I cause all suffering beings to look into the sound of their voices to obtain liberation. Surangama Sutra

Two of the greatest tragedies which face us on a global proportion as we turn into this next millennium are poverty and human mass slaughter.

The poverty of which I speak is not the material poverty which we are so used to hearing about. It is another kind of poverty, far, far worse and more destructive to the fabric of society than economic poverty. This is the poverty of isolation and loneliness.

It is a kind of poverty which is extremely insidious and continues to increase and underscore our family life and social order. The symptoms of this social sickness are many – broken relationships and divorce, crime, emotional and physical violence, war between communities, mental illness, and addictions; it is a poverty which strips millions of self-esteem. A person is left dry of any value or worth and is rendered powerless.

The tragedy is that although we live in densely populated cities and chat over countless cups of tea and coffee, the sense of isolation is ever increasing within our communities, within our work places, within our schools and even within our churches.

The second great tragedy is that we have witnessed more human carnage this last century in war and murder than in any other time of world history. This is due in part to the greater destructive potential of modern weapons. In early days of world history one spear may have killed one person in war. Now one missile has the capability of destroying a whole nation.

It thoroughly astounds me that with all our sophisticated technology the world has not advanced very far at all in terms of peace and the sanctity of human life. We are able to send a space probe to the outermost limits of our universe, but we are thoroughly unable (or unwilling) to work toward a peaceful society.

I would boldly suggest that the reason for this is that we are building societies with the predisposition to instant self-gratification. We seek personal power and material possessions and we want it right now. War is a multi million-dollar business and it grants personal empowerment – for the winners that is. Peace on the other hand requires community effort and its fruits though plentiful, even financially, are not seen immediately. You can’t make a quick buck on peace.

Our love affair with technology has enhanced our need for instant self-gratification. The Internet enables us to connect instantly with others at the opposite end of the globe. We can have cyber-relationships, even cyber-sex. The iPod has fast become the ‘mePod’ as millions of people absorb themselves within their invisible cone of silence. Here is the real danger. We are drawn into the illusion of being part of a ‘global community’. This is nothing more than a fraud. Hugh Mackay, Australian Psychologist and social commentator observes in his book Why Don’t People Listen? :”When the emphasis is on information transfer rather than relationships, the life of the (global) village becomes meaningless: shared data is no substitute for the sense of shared identity and mutual obligation which come from shared experience.” People are beginning now to isolate themselves from real community. The result will be an ever-increasing sense of isolation.

Listening is a communication experience which has within it the power to break the grip of isolation and to plant and nurture a new community. Listening shared from the level of the human heart. No other communication technology is able to do this.

Several years ago I began to notice the importance of Empathy and  how deep listening (listening with the intent to understand) can affect individuals and be the catalyst for positive change both personally and as a community. As a society we have forgotten how to listen. This has been gravely injurious to our corporate journey as a society as well as to our personal growth and well-being. We have lost our prophetic foundations, as when we don’t listen we miss vital information. Listening and vision go hand in hand. When we don’t listen we don’t see the problem ahead – we fail to see the big picture sand we move blindly into the future.

I have observed what ‘real’ Listening can do. I have seen it heal people, turn enemies into friends, I have seen it change people – dramatically, and I have seen it close sales deals worth millions of dollars where no other ‘strategy’ had worked. It is powerful beyond all measure.

In speaking to many people about their recovery from difficult circumstances or emotional illness, I have heard people talk about that thing which really made the difference to them – the turning point, if you like – was that some one took the time to really listen to them. This intrigued me as this phrase kept coming up time and time again: “really listened”. What was it in this act of “really listening’ which was able to turn a person’s life around?

But we don’t have time any more. We have systems to attend to, reports to write, deadlines to meet, meetings to go to. Furthermore, the things we listen to is mainly information shuffling as this is what our technology has taught us to do. Emails are quick and precise. Text messaging is even briefer couched in texting language for rapid application. We are fast becoming shallow beings forgetting how to plummet the depth of our souls. Information has become our God.

I will never forget the words of a potential client when I was young and green who once said to me “I don’t care what you know. I just want to know that you care. You listened to me. That is enough and that is all.”
