We Are Formed By Our Thoughts

Published 19/02/2014 by inspiringyourspirit

look for a small miracle

Mr Dear Friends,

We are formed and moulded by our thoughts.
Those whose minds are shaped by selfless thoughts give joy when they speak or act.
Joy follows them like a shadow that never leaves them.

Be careful with your thoughts because they will be formed into what you become and what you receive in your lifetime, act with kindness and compassion, give out live and happiness in everything you do.

And most of all enjoy your life with a smile 🙂

If I could and sit and chat for one hour with anyone; living or dead, who would I choose?

Published 18/02/2014 by inspiringyourspirit

bench

I have thought long and hard about this question because there are so many people both living and dead that inspire me from Plato and Socrates to Jesus, The Buddha and Lord Shiva to Ghandi, Martin Luther King, Mother Theresa, Winston Churchill, Confucius, Lao Tzu, Enzo Ferrari, Oprah, Amma, Dalai Lama, Thich Nhat Hanh, Paulo Coelho, Pema Chödrön….etc, the list could go on and on…then I came up with my choice

My Father

If I could bring him down from heaven and sit on that bench and chat with him again for one full hour, wow! That would be amazing 🙂 My list of questions would be endless, all the things I wish I had asked him but never did, how is the life now, what is he doing, what is he experiencing, advice for me on my journey etc

And You?

Who would you choose and why?

Where does your life sit on the Happiness Scale?

Published 10/02/2014 by inspiringyourspirit

happiness_001

Hello my friends,

A quick question for you…Where do you sit on the happiness scale?

Are you happy? ….Yes? Or No?

Do you think you are happy but in reality you are not!

Happiness is very important, we all need happiness in our lives, but how can we achieve ‘Happiness’?

responsible-for-my-own-happiness

Edward Diener is the Smiley Emeritus Professor of Psychology in the University of Illinois. His nickname is Dr. Happiness. For the past three decades he has carried out research in the field of human happiness. It is not easy to measure happiness. Even the happiest of people feel unhappy at times and even unhappy people may have brief periods of happiness. In 1989 he created the Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS). The SWLS is a short 5-item instrument designed to measure global cognitive judgments of satisfaction with one’s life. The scale usually requires only about one minute to fill. (See graphic below)

happychart

In his book Happiness – Unlocking the Mysteries of Psychological Wealth he sums up the research findings on happiness. In his book he makes the point that happiness is not a place but a process. It is not simply a pleasant state that comes about by obtaining the good things of life such as health, a good marriage and a large pay cheque. Though it seems like common sense, happiness does not come about by collecting the good things of life. It is more a process, a way of experiencing life that includes positive thinking, meaning and spirituality.
The second major point he makes is that happiness or psychological wealth is important for effective functioning. Critics have charged that as the emotion of happiness is transient it fundamentally is an unrealistic emotion, the pursuit of which is a waste of time. However, research shows that this is not true. Positive emotions or happiness help people to be healthier, improve relationships, think more creatively, become interested in new activities and find work more meaningful.

1601090_651833021540881_2059768907_n

“There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so” said Shakespeare in Hamlet. The Stoic philosopher Epictetus said something similar – “People are not disturbed by things, but by the view they take of them”. So a happy mindset does help in keeping a person happy and Diener in his book gives useful advice on how we can maintain and foster such a happy mindset. The acronym he uses is AIM which stands for attention, interpretation and memory.
Most people think that it is the interpretation part that is important but forget that attention and memory are important too. To be successful at positive thinking you must first pay attention. Remember that old hymn, “Count your blessings, name them one by one…. See what God hath done…..you will keep singing as the days go by”. So pay attention to your successes and blessings.

The second letter of the acronym AIM stands for interpretation. How people interpret the world around them plays an important and significant role in how happy they are. People who tend to interpret the world around them as difficult and hostile are likely to become unhappy in their mood whereas those who see the world as a happy and friendly place are likely to be happy in their mood. Remember that song by Louis Armstrong, “I see trees of green, red roses too, I see them bloom, for me and you, And I think to myself, What a wonderful world”.
The third letter in the acronym AIM stands for memory. Research has shown that we don’t remember things exactly as they happened. A little inaccuracy in your memory is not such a bad thing if it enables us to remember with nostalgia the good old days which perhaps were not so good after all. Perhaps this may be one way that happy people differ from unhappy people. Happy people remember happy events and forget the bad moments and unhappy one do the opposite. Again research has shown this to be true. Happy individuals were found to have similar negative and positive events in their life compared to unhappy persons but they differed in how they recalled these past events. People who are happy by disposition tend to err on the positive viewing even negative events in a more positive or humorous light.

abc-of-genuine-happiness

Research has shown that actively recalling good memories has beneficial effects on wellbeing. When people are asked to actively savor specific past events they report feeling happier when compared to a control group. An important aspect of savoring is focused attention. So spend some time each day thinking of you’re past happy memories and savoring those positive moments and it will improve your sense of wellbeing. As Patience Strong once said, your happy memories are like jewels in a jewel box, which you can take out from time to time and enjoy.

Try these out
Professor Sonja Lyubomirsky who migrated from Russia at the age of 10, is now a psychologist in the University of California. She is also a leading researcher on happiness. Here is Sonja Lyubomirsky’s recipe for happiness based on her work and that of others.

•Count your blessings: You can maintain a gratitude diary where you write down once a week three to five things for which you are grateful. These can range from mundane things like good weather to more important events such your job promotion.

•Practice acts of kindness: These can be systematic such as giving a meal regularly to an old age home or spontaneous, such helping an elderly person cross the road. When you are kind to people, whether friends or strangers, it gives rise to a cascade of positive events improving relationships all-round and causing people to reciprocate your kindness to you and even others.

•Savor life’s joys: Pay more attention to moments of happiness and joy.

•Thank a mentor: If there is somebody out there who has helped you in important moments of your life, don’t wait, thank him or her preferably by meeting the person.

•Learn to forgive: Write a letter of forgiveness to a person who has hurt you. Persistent rumination on past wrongs and thoughts of revenge have a detrimental effect on your mood. Forgiving increases positive feelings and gives you peace of mind.

•Invest time and energy in friends and family: The biggest factor in happiness appears to be personal relationships, not money, job title or even health.

•Take care of your body: Sleep well and exercise regularly and don’t use addictive substances. A healthy body is definitely a major booster of happiness.
Develop strategies for coping with stress and difficult moments in life: Hard times come to all but belief in a higher power or higher secular meaning in life has been shown to increase life satisfaction.

What are the sources of happiness?

Happier people are more likely to live longer and tend to be healthier, more successful, and more socially engaged than people who describe themselves as less happy. But what causes happiness? And can we change how happy we are?
Three basic sources of happiness
Researchers have explored three basic sources of happiness: genetics, including temperament and personality; life circumstances, such as wealth and health; and our own choices.

We tend to overestimate the importance of life circumstances in how happy we are.
We think if only we had more money, or a better job, or fell in love, that we would be happier. And we sometimes underestimate how much control we have over our own happiness. Psychologist Sonja Lyubomirsky, in her book The How of Happiness: A Scientific Approach to Getting the Life You Want, analyzed studies and reports that 50% of our happiness is set by our genes, 10% by life circumstances beyond our control, and 40% by our own actions. Researchers say that people tend to have a “set point” or “baseline” level of happiness, but that this point can change.
Even though genetic factors like temperament and personality play a large role, there is almost an equally large role under our own control. We have the power to make choices that can raise—or lower—our set point.

One way to become happier is to cultivate positive emotions.
At one time psychologists saw positive emotions simply as the sign of a happy person. Now they are learning how positive emotions actually cause us to be happier.

Some of the positive emotions that psychologists are studying:

•
Gratitude
•Serenity
•Joy
•
Interest
•
Hope
•
Pride
•
Amusement
•Inspiration
•Awe
•
Love

happiness

Here are some ideas on how to bring happiness into your life over a 4 week period:

Week 1: Keep a Daily Diary

Can you easily identify the daily activities, interactions and occurrences that make you happiest? Keeping a daily diary will help you identify the situations and people that make you happiest. Take note of these occurrences, which can be as small as listening to music while working, talking to a good friend, or spending time with your family – and slowly begin to increase the frequency of those tasks which make you happiest.
This step is about self-awareness and thinking critically about your daily reactions and emotions. Only by understanding why we feel the way we do can we expect to make lasting meaningful change.

Week 2: Fake It Till You Make It

This week, you are going to put a smile on your face even if you’re feeling blue, grumpy or burdened. A response called facial feedback indicates that when you smile, you send a signal to your brain that says, “I am happy.” Additionally, if you’re smiling, you’re likely to seem more approachable and happy to others – and people are more likely to smile back. We experience positive emotions more frequently than negative ones, but negative emotions are unfortunately stronger.
It’s important to remember that you aren’t attempting to eliminate all your negative emotions – such a task would overwhelm anyone. Instead, try to increase the instances of positive emotions (remember your daily dairy!).

Week 3: Create a Diversion

When you find yourself drowning in a sea of negative thoughts – “I’m overweight,” “I’m unlikeable,” “Why am I even at this party?” – you need to find a strategy to stop ruminating. This applies to social situations and when you are spending time alone. It may seem like an overwhelming task to divert your attention from issues swirling in your own mind – but all you need are 1 or 2 escape mechanisms.
If alone, put on your favorite song and sing along or go for a long walk. When in a social setting; try to concentrate on what others are saying in the conversation rather than what’s going on in your own mind.

Week 4: Random Acts of Kindness

During the fourth week of your happiness action plan, you are going to commit 1 random act of kindness a day. By feeding a stranger’s parking meter, sending someone a thank you note, or paying someone a compliment, you give yourself a burst of positive emotion. By practicing small acts of kindness, you will perceive yourself and others more positively. You’ll also appreciate your good fortune in comparison. Give yourself a self-worth, self-esteem boost by helping others.

If we have no peace it is because we have forgotten we belong to each other.

Published 27/01/2014 by inspiringyourspirit

peace1

Oh Mother Theresa, you were certainly a saint and very attuned to the problems of our world. Yes, I agree, we have forgotten that we belong to each other, we are all of one world, one humanity and one real race all going back to one couple right at the start of humanity. We forget this simple thing because we see each other as different, different colours, different countries, different religions, different cultural beliefs, different languages spoken, different political control, different ways of life…just different!…But, we are ONE and the SAME!

I notice political spin happening all the time, one country blaming the next for whatever, one political power challenging another using whatever excuse to gain more control, control natural resources such as oil, gas and god forbid water, gain more power, one country using its strength to control another country or countries, using that might to frighten and manipulate the powers that be to do as they say; total control over what we do, what we buy, what we think, how we live..total control! You know; George Orwell was not far wrong in his book 1984!

I wish, just wish that we could ‘Wake Up’!
Wake up to the fact that we are all one and the same, we are all connected, we are one humanity and we are being controlled by the powers that be, within our countries, by our politicians and by the corporate elites, these groups and individuals have the control, they manage our lives with total control…We like to think we are free, most of us think we live in the land of the free….but do we? How much freedom do we actually have?

We need to really wake up and smell the roses, take a long hard look at our world, take ownership as indivduals to do something, something to change our world, to bring about peace in our lifetime, we can do it! We can bring about change and we can gain back the control.
In the words of the song ‘A change is gonna Come’ by Sam Cooke;

I was born by the river in a little tent
Oh and just like the river I’ve been running ever since
It’s been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will
It’s been too hard living but I’m afraid to die
’
Cause I don’t know what’s up there beyond the sky
It’s been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will
I go to the movie and I go downtown
Somebody keep telling me, “Don’t hang around”
It’s been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will
Then I go to my brother
And I say, “Brother, help me please”
But he winds up knockin’ me
Back down on my knees
Oh there been times that I thought I couldn’t last for long
But now I think I’m able to carry on
It’s been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will
I believe that together we can Make Change Come.

Perception…How do you feel other people perceive You?

Published 23/01/2014 by inspiringyourspirit

It’s all in your mind!

It’s all about conditioning, conditioning that starts at a very early age, it’s all about competitiveness and so called beauty! From our parents, our teachers, our so called friends saying we need to loose weight, be smarter, to wear different clothes, to have a certain hair style, to watch certain programs, to listen to certain music, to like certain things…..To COMPLY!

Do I look Pretty or Beautiful enough?

Am I too fat or too thin?

Should I wear different clothes?

Should I like this music?

Do I comply with the pictures I see in magazines, the stars and celebrities I see on the screen, the images I see on my phone?

No, No, No….

This is who I am!

You do not need to justify yourself to anyone!

You do not need to compensate who you are to fit in to how others think or say you should be!

Cool Kids, Ugly Kids, Pretty Kids, Geek Kids, Fat Kids, Skinny Kids, White Kids, Black Kids, Asian Kids, Handicapped Kids, Smart Kids, Challenged Kids, Rich Kids, Poor Kids…Judgement is done by how you look and what you have or do not have and not by communication and for who you really are!

Remember my friends, there is ‘Always Light out There’, you just have to walk away from the darkness that holds YOU back and go out and find it!

Sometimes your own worst enemies are from within your own skin, sometimes they share your own face and claim to love you but remember that/those hateful voices from within are not Love. ‘I promise you’, there will come a day when your fight is bigger than your fear, when you really start to claw your way out of your body to prove you exist. Leave that skin behind for someone else and design your own wings and remember you are a masterpiece, magnificent in your own glory 🙂

You are the ‘Light’

Let’s re-write these unspoken rules and break free, there is room for every type and everyone on this planet, so break yourself free from your chains and become you, yourself and stand proud in your own magnificence 🙂

The entire population is more likely to be effected. Actually I think the true reading at this time will be more like 400+ but who am I to say!

Anyway back to my post for today 🙂

I would love your feedback, your comments and your thoughts on this one please because I’m feeling lonely here in my apartment looking out at this grey polluted sky 😦

So Escape! If you could escape, escape to anywhere, real or fantasy, where would it be to and why?

[wallcoo]_mountain_and_lake_Photography_82849[wallcoo]_mountain_and_lake_Photography_38012

In my case, I would escape to the mountains, to the forest to the trees where I could breathe the fresh mountain air, fill my lungs with invigorating fresh life giving air to feel the cool breeze and the gentle warmth of the sun on my face, to smell the grass, the sweet intoxicating scents of nature, the flowers, the herbs, the soil. To watch the birds dance in the air, chasing each other from tree to tree from branch to branch, to observe the butterflies and the bees as they go about their daily task of collecting natures goodness and helping spread the love from one flower to another. And, to sit in silence, to hear the quiet, the gentle rustle of leaves as they sway in the wind, the sound of water flowing in the steams and the distant splash of a fish jumping after dragonflies as they skim over the lake, far, far away from the madness of city life, from the life of constant drive, noise, selfishness and anger away from the fast lane of life to where we were all destined to be, with Mother Nature, with Gaia…Home 🙂

You may look great on the outside but is your life good on the Inside?

Published 17/01/2014 by inspiringyourspirit

outside and in

It is so interesting how we treat ourselves and how we feel we need to portray ourselves to others, this is particularly important in China and the Far East in the form and name of ‘Face’, how we look to the eyes of others. “FACE” – A CULTURAL THING

For those of you not well-versed in Chinese culture, there is something you should know about the concept of face or having face. Stemming from this, there are also the related concepts of losing face, of saving face, and even of lending face.

Face is a concept not hard to understand because, even as Westerners, everyone has face. When equated to Western values, face is very similar to the notion of reputation. Face is a dynamic which applies to both personal and business relationships in China.

Corollary to face is the inseparable concept of guanxi or “relations”. Face and guanxi work hand-in-hand. One without the other renders useless the dynamic these two concepts collectively work together.

So, looking good to others from the outside is important but I think equally or even more importantly is looking good on the inside too, feeling good and proud of yourself, loving yourself, living your life compassionately and caring for others from the inside out…from the heart.

If you can start feeling good on the inside, smiling at yourself and what you stand for from the inside then you will portray a bright side for all to see 🙂

I awake.

I step out of bed; my feet touch the wooden floor and the cold reality of dawn hits the soles of my feet like that first lick of an ice cream freezing your brain

I look to the sky and give thanks for yet another day of life, grateful for my awakening, ever grateful for my now and the opportunity life gives me

I can hear the calling from within my body as my stomach calls out to me triumphantly requesting fuel for the fire, sustenance for the day ahead

I awake

The fragrant smell of gently toasting bread and the heady aroma of freshly brewed coffee fill my senses, the joy stimulates my memory of what’s still to come

I awake

The gentle rustling sound of a knife spreading butter on crisp brown toast and the sweet nectar of honey greet my senses, my taste buds explode with joy as I take that first bite

I awake

At my alter I stand, I light a candle and place it carefully before my Lord Buddha, I bow my head and take a moment to reflect, my life, my day, my journey

GUAN YIN
Guan Yin, Mother of Compassion in ancient Chinese culture, blows gently into your life, and should be welcomed as an eternal source of comfort and peace. Guan Yin’s values are about co-operation, sharing, balance, harmony and partnership; she is highly sensitive and aware. Guan Yin’s esoteric attributes are those of compassion, healing, and centering.
She lives in the heart chakra, standing in full acceptance, suspended in tranquillity, relishing joy in the silence .

Guan Yin is light and weightless – the qualities that result from highly tuned vales of tolerance and acceptance. She is here to tell you to release factors that inhibit you, that prevent you from connecting with others. Melt those walls of ice around your heart; forgive the person who you feel has committed a grievance against you; open your heart and radiate love so that love can come back to you.

Close your eyes in a tranquil space. Visualise Guan Yin resting with the world on one shoulder, her cheek resting against it. She sees you, and you are drawn to the love radiating from her heart. She shows you how to take the world from your shoulders, hold it in your hands, and dance in joyful, carefree circles. You see the earth’s water rippling, the leaves in the trees blowing, the birds soaring without effort. Know this is happening purely thanks to your joy.

When you walk through each day, remember Guan Yin’s presence whenever you see the soaring birds, the rustling leaves, the rippling waters. Use these triggers as a reminder to take the world off your shoulders, and to dance with abandon, with your face to the skies and
your arms in the air.

AFFIRMATIONS:

I forgive
I radiate love
I am tolerant of everyone around me
I have great joy, and therefore great energy
My peace is shared peace
I am weightless and free of burden

Pull over to the side and take a Break

fact-based-decision-making

A problem with a solution needs a decision. But how do we make the important decision in our life?

Usually we try to get someone else to make the difficult decision for us. That way, if it goes wrong, we’ve got some one to blame. Some of my friends try to trick me into making decisions for them, but I won’t. All I will do is show them how they can make wise decisions by themselves.

When we come to the crossroads and we are unsure what direction to take, we should pull over to the side, have a break and wait for a bus.

Winnipeg_bus_good_will_picture_by_dave_cournoyer

Soon, usually when we are not expecting it, a bus arrives. On the front of a public bus is a sign in a big bold letters indicating where the bus is going. If that destination suits you, then take that bus, if not, wait. There’s always another bus behind.

images

In other words, when we have to make a decision and are unsure what that decision should be, we need to pull over to the side, have a break and wait. Soon, usually when we are not expecting it, a solution will come. Every solution has its own destination, if that destination suits us, then we take that solution. If not, we wait. There’s always another solution coming behind.

That’s how I make my decisions. I gather all the information and wait for the solution. A good one will always come, as long as I am patient. It usually arrives unexpectedly, when I am not thinking about it.

I can sleep at night safely so…..

Many people all around OUR world are not safe tonight, they won’t have shelter to protect them from the storm and keep them warm and dry, they wont have food on their table and clean safe water to drink, tomorrow their children wont have a school to go to, no education available and they will be in FEAR for their lives…Can they get through another long cold night and if so, can they make it safely through another day of torture and torment!

Do not let consciousness dwell on the products of existence and things that come and go, for there is no rest of relief there. When you understand that by taking the objects of the world for granted as total reality, you are tied to the world, then this understanding will release you from your dependence on objects and will stop your craving and your desire for constant becoming. Showing your appreciation can even save a life!

Published 08/01/2014 by inspiringyourspirit

Appreciation

As the picture above says, expressing our appreciation with words, a smile or a hug costs so little and means so much, they can make someone’s’ day or even change a life.

When was the last time you showed your appreciation to others around you? When did you last give someone a pat on the back and praise for a job ‘Well done’?

In my job I often see people of every age group and in all levels of authority and ability who are longing for someone to show them appreciation, they are looking for a simple comment like ‘well done’, ‘thank you’, a smile showing you are pleased and happy with them, a pat on the back, a hug or even the warmth of a handshake showing you recognize them for who they are, all they do and all they have done.

Maybe we need to set aside a global day for Appreciation like Mothers Day, Fathers Day, Teachers Day, Valentines Day etc., a day set aside for us to show our appreciations to the people around us, young and old, rich or poor, colleagues, family and friends… after all Compassion has no limit and Kindness has no enemy.

Cold Play Fix You by Young At Heart

Published 20/12/2013 by inspiringyourspirit

My Dear Friends,

I felt the need to share this heart felt video with you from Young At Heart http://youngatheartchorus.com , I watched the documentary about this singing group from Northampton the other evening and I was brought to tears and smiles many times throughout the program. The ages of the group range from 73 to 92 and this song was sung in the memory of two of their choir members who had passed away that week.

Enjoy and if you have the chance, please watch the documentary and think of all the joy they bring to the world 🙂

Namaste with Love

Always
